San Francisco SPCA and Macy's Celebrate 30th Anniversary of the Iconic Holiday Windows at Union Square

Union Square tradition has helped more than 8,800 dogs and cats find new homes.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF., November 11, 2016 – The San Francisco SPCA and Macy’s Union Square are teaming up to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Holiday Windows.  This holiday season adoptable animals will once again be showcased in the effort to find them loving homes. On Friday, November 18, at 5:00 p.m., the Windows will be unveiled at the corner of Stockton and O’Farrell Streets during an event hosted by Winner of Top Chef Just Dessert and SF SPCA supporter, Yigit Pura. Prior to the unveiling, the De Marillac Academy choir will perform classic holiday songs.

Last year alone, 261 cats and dogs found new homes in time for the holidays, and more than $88,000 was raised to support the SF SPCA’s life-saving programs. Since the beginning of Holiday Windows, more than 8,800 dogs and cats have been adopted at the event.

“Over the years, Macy’s generosity has helped thousands of animals find loving families during the holiday season,” said Dr. Jennifer Scarlett, SF SPCA President. “We’re grateful to be partnering with them for our momentous 30th anniversary! Holiday Windows has become a true part of the San Francisco holiday spirit.”

The theme of this year’s windows reflects the magic of the holidays with the return of Macy’s ninth annual “Believe” campaign. As Santa’s home away from home, Macy’s holiday windows serve as a joyful reminder to all passersby to embrace the spirit of giving and generosity this season.

“Macy’s Union Square is proud to continue the tradition of our iconic SF SPCA Holiday Windows,” said Robert Sleigh, Vice President General Manager of Macy’s Union Square. “Not only are the windows a symbol of the holidays in San Francisco, but they also spread the generosity and cheer of the season by finding loving homes for animals in need and bringing joy to the families that adopt them.”

Holiday Windows would not be possible without the help of the generous volunteers. Last year more than 750 volunteers helped collect donations, greet the public, and spread holiday cheer. The two-hour shifts do not require any prior training. Groups are welcome, and children are invited to volunteer alongside their parents. For details or to sign up, visit

Holiday Windows will have video cameras that live stream to Tune in to watch the kittens and puppies!

On Thursday, December 8, Macy’s will host Santa Paws, the SF SPCA’s annual Santa Claus photo event. Customers can bring their four-legged friends and get a photo with Santa from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. in Holiday Lane on Macy’s seventh floor.

For those who can't make it to Macy’s, the SF SPCA will be waiving the adoption fees for adult cats (6+ months) adopted from either of its permanent shelters. Visit the adoption centers in the Mission at 250 Florida Street, or in Pacific Heights at 2343 Fillmore Street.

Holiday Windows is sponsored by Purina One, Tidy Cats, Obe Bowls, and Zoetis.
