We adopted a border collie mix from the SF SPCA in 2007. Her SPCA name was "Iris" because her eyes are 2 different colors but we quickly changed that to Bella which we thought better suited her (Bella means "beautiful"). She was just 1 year old at that time. She greeted us with such love and excitement, it was a no brainer. However, we faced many challenges with Bella when we brought her home. We believe she may have been abused as a puppy. She was afraid of the outside world and we had to work pretty hard to get her comfortable even going outside. She HATED the sound of garbage trucks and we had to expose her to that sound constantly, even putting on a recording of those sounds inside our house, to rehabilitate her.
There were times when we weren't sure she would work out for us but after hiring a trainer that came into our home, there was great hope. Bella has been an amazing addition to our family and we can't imagine life without her. We often wonder, "Who rescued who?" because after 7 years she has brought us great joy and unconditional love.
